Abstract: A modified version of the HHIE-S was posted on the HIA website to promote hearing awareness.  Visitors to the website were asked to complete the 10-question screening tool and indicate if they were currently wearing hearing aids.   To date over 4500 unique respondents have completed the tool.   Data was analyzed to examine the level of self-reported hearing loss and the percentage of respondents wearing devices in each category (mild, moderate, severe).

Summary: As part of a hearing awareness campaign, a slightly modified version of the HHIE-S was posted to the website of the Hearing Industries Association.  The purpose was to collect information on self-reported hearing loss and whether the respondent was wearing a hearing aid or had tried one in the past.   This screening project was a part of a larger campaign to encourage those experiencing hering loss to take the screening and if indicated see a hearing professional for a compete hearing assessment.  Over 5000 individuals have completed the screening tool, and the results are as follows.   Those with a score of 10 or less were considered to have no hearing difficulty, scores of 10-14 were considered to have mild hearing difficulty and a score over 26 had significant difficulty.    The no difficult group had 969 individuals with 45 reporting hearing aid use.  For the mild-moderate group, there were 1689 total individuals with 239 reporting hearing aid use.  The significant difficulty group had 1588 individuals with 596 reporting hearing aid use.  The results indicate that as hearing loss increases the number of individuals wearing devices increased.  Some what 

Surprisingly there were 43 individuals within the no difficulty (normal) group that reported hearing aid use.
The results will be discussed in terms of the broader awareness campaign and in relation to hearing aid use among the groups.
