Abstract: We explore and report on the experiences of a sample of persons with varying degrees of hearing difficulties who are new to the use of InnoCaption, which provides real-time captioning of phone calls on smartphones. InnoCaption gathered information from the end-user to inform our understanding of their experience, helping us to ensure that persons with hearing difficulties find InnoCaption accessible and advantageous in situations in which they use captions. In addition to exploring the types of calls in which the app is being used, we investigated some of the self-rated psychosocial benefits of the use of captioning with smartphone technology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the Psychosocial Benefits of Improved Communication via Captioning for Auditory Rehabilitation: Gain insights into how the use of captioning technology in smartphones, such as InnoCaption, translates to psychosocial benefits. This includes understanding how the reduction of stress and fatigue associated with communication challenges can lead to positive impacts on overall quality of life, such as increased confidence and reduced feelings of loneliness. Strategies for incorporating captioning for auditory rehabilitation will be discussed.
  • Understand the Impact of Captioning Technology on Emotional Well-Being and Connection: Learn how the use of smartphone technology with captioning applications, like InnoCaption, can enhance emotional well-being by reducing feelings of isolation, loneliness, stress, and frustration, particularly among older adults with hearing loss. This includes understanding how these technologies enable better communication with family, friends, and for medical appointments, thereby improving the overall quality of life and emotional gain.
  • Evaluate the Efficacy of Captioning Apps in Diverse Hearing Loss Scenarios: Develop skills to assess the effectiveness of captioning apps like InnoCaption in various hearing loss scenarios, including severe to profound hearing loss. This includes learning to evaluate the app's impact on the quality of phone conversations, its ease of use for patients, and its role in reducing communication barriers in everyday life. Additionally, understand the regulatory and accessibility context within which these technologies operate, such as compliance with HIPAA and FCC regulations, to better inform patients about their options.
