Abstract: When managing a patient with hearing loss, audiologists routinely identify the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss that may be impacting a patient's audibility, evaluate their ability to understand speech (unaided), and verify that hearing aid programming is hitting prescriptive targets to restore audibility for speech sufficiently. But what a patient wants to know is, how much are these hearing aids going to help? And, are they giving me the best hearing possible?
Aided speech recognition testing can demonstrate the benefits of hearing aids…or the limitations that would suggest cochlear implants may be a better option. This session (and the associated hands-on Best Practices Pavilion) will ensure that every audiologist is ready to elevate their practice by incorporating aided speech recognition in their routine test battery.
This Mini Module will review the rationale, technical details, and common applications of aided speech recognition testing.
In between, check out the Best Practices Pavilion to get hands-on experience.
Attendees can choose to attend any or all of the components of this multi-part offering.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the value of routinely incorporating aided speech recognition testing into practice
List the required steps to calibrate, administer, and interpret aided speech recognition testing materials
Apply the results of aided speech recognition testing to validate hearing aid fittings and identify next steps for patients (e.g., reprogramming current technology, new technology, cochlear implant candidacy).
