Karen S. Helfer is Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Associate Dean of Graduate, Postdoctoral, and Faculty Development in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her teaching responsibilities have included undergraduate and graduate courses in clinical audiology, medical audiology, and aging. Dr. Helfer’s research program, which is funded by NIH-NIDCD, focuses on how aging affects speech perception in complex listening situations with multiple talkers. She has special interest in studying changes in speech understanding and listening effort that occur early in the aging process (i.e., in middle-aged adults). Dr. Helfer is a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
